WHAT IS SET PLAN?
The European Strategic Energy Technology Plan aims to accelerate the deployment of green technologies.
It’s a key part of Europe’s plan to move towards a climate-neutral energy system, meaning we use less carbon and cleaner energy, while doing it quickly and at lower costs.

When was the SET Plan created?
The SET Plan started in 2007, and in 2015, it became a central tool for Europe’s Energy Union, which focuses on research, innovation, and competitiveness in the energy sector.
How does the SET Plan work?
By developing new technologies and lowering their costs, the SET Plan encourages EU countries, companies, and research institutions to work together. It helps align national research and innovation programs with a common goal: developing low-carbon energy across the EU and associated countries.
What are the SET Plan's key actions?
- Integrating renewable energy technologies into the energy systems
- Reducing technology costs
- Creating new technologies and services for consumers
- Improving the resilience and security of energy systems
- Developing new materials and technologies for buildings
- Boosting energy efficiency in industry
- Increasing competitiveness in the global battery sector and e-mobility
- Advancing renewable fuels and bioenergy
- Enhancing carbon capture and storage
- Ensuring nuclear safety
Each of these actions is carried out by 14 Implementation Working Groups (IWGs), with each group focusing on one key technology.
