Researcher and Junior Assistant Professor

Annika Boldrini is a researcher and Junior Assistant Professor at Utrecht University, specializing in the decarbonization of energy systems and industries. Her work focuses on the electrification of large energy consumers, such as energy-intensive industries. Decarbonizing these consumers increases reliance on the power system, which must ensure a reliable, cost-effective electricity supply while integrating high shares of variable renewable energy sources. Annika’s research assesses the potential for flexibility of industrial energy demand, exploring how industries can adjust their energy usage to align with renewable supply and reduce operating costs. She combines consumer-level analysis with a broader system perspective of the European power sector through modelling. In this context, she evaluates how future flexible industrial demand can contribute to lowering system costs. Having completed part of her PhD at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, Annika has gained insights into policy and technical aspects of energy systems at the European level. She is dedicated to advancing knowledge that supports both academic growth and practical applications in energy system integration, providing actionable strategies for a sustainable energy future.
