Dr. Judit Mádl-Szőnyi

Eötvös Loránd University

Professor

Judit Mádl-Szőnyi is a hydrogeologist with over 30 years of experience in academia and broader research. Judit was awarded her MSc in geology and PhD in hydrogeology from Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest and her DSc at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Her research focuses on understanding regional groundwater flow and dealing with its geological and environmental consequences, including heat distribution. In 2011 she helped found and was appointed Chair of IAH’s Regional Groundwater Flow Commission of the International Association of Hydrogeologists. The Commission’s activities highlight the significance of flow systems in all types of hydrogeological solutions worldwide. Over the last decades, through Shell, MOL R&D projects, and European innovation and development projects, Judit has adapted this knowledge for hydrocarbon exploration and, later on, energy transition goals, including geothermal energy and related mineral resources. Judit has been an invited speaker at international symposia and a guest lecturer or expert in Mexico, China, Slovenia, Germany, Tunisia, and Sweden. She has received numerous awards, including the prestigious President’s Award of the IAH in 2021. Judit has been working at Eötvös Loránd University as a Professor, the hydrogeology research group leader, chair of the Geology Department and a vice-dean of the Faculty of Science.
